DOING SOMETHING DEEPLY UNCOMFORTABLE TODAY…
I’ve always had a rule never to post about myself. But Jon Evans took my frequently offered advice , “do what’s uncomfortable” and challenged me to break that rule by sharing the podcast I did for his excellent Uncensored CMO.
So why the discomfort? (And yes, in the grand scheme of uncomfortable things people do, this barely registers.)
Many reasons. I’m instinctively wary of self-promotion. I notice every tic and every unclear sentence. And I’m quietly hoping no one watches the video version because I look exhausted (I wasn’t. That’s just my face)…
As an executive coach, one of the things I help people with is learning not to listen to their critical inner voice. So, to avoid being a complete hypocrite, I’ve even posted a video clip below.
If you have time to listen to the full episode, I’d love your thoughts — and please share if it resonates. We talk about leadership, self-doubt, career management and navigating these turbulent times – themes I know many people are wrestling with.

If you could just pick 3 bits of advice to give everybody listening to have a successful career, what are the three things be? I think the first one would be, not surprisingly, stop talking about the impostor syndrome. There are going to be ups and downs. The downs usually come when you’re changing jobs, the UPS when you feel like you’ve mastered it. But what you’re looking at is not measured in months, it’s measured in years. Is it going in that right direction? And in addition to that, focus more on your strengths and don’t listen. Nearly as often to that inner critic, it doesn’t have to drive you. Swing out big. Do not do what I did and play it safe. Swing out big. You can be so much more than you ever dreamed. You have to have the will. You have to have the help, you have to have the support, but you can. And thirdly, I’d say pay a lot of attention to what I call the three R’s, relationships, results and resilience. People underestimate the role of resilience. We have to be resilient. It is a learned skill and relationships, my goodness, how much quicker can you get something done if you can pick up the phone, If you know each other as people, if you respect each other, it makes a huge difference. The relationships help build your resilience because you have support with your focus on results. Because it is always about that delivery. It becomes a flywheel of success.
