Twenty-nine seed-stage AI companies have been named to the new Emergent list, a peer-nominated ranking of startups that established AI founders believe have the potential to become generational companies, Newcomer reported. Produced with venture firm Felicis, the list includes only companies that have not raised more than a seed round and were nominated by one or more current or former founder speakers at Cerebral Valley AI Summits.
Founders Nominate Peers for Generational Potential
Each company on the Emergent list was nominated by established AI founders who explained why the startup has exceptional potential, citing the brilliance of the founder, the technology, or the market opportunity. The nominations offer a window into how founders assess their peers when traditional metrics are scarce.
The largest group of nominated startups is building tools to run and control AI agents. Hardware also features prominently, with several companies focused on running queries locally on smaller devices like phones and laptops. Commitment to open source appears repeatedly as a strategy to keep costs down or enable local execution.
Agent Control Tools Draw the Most Nominations
Guillermo Rauch, founder and CEO of Vercel, nominated Agentcard, which “believes agents should have full autonomy to pay for things online” and powers payments for agentic startups and consumer apps. Rauch also nominated Armature, which captures user sessions on AI platforms to show what users ask and how agents use products.
Mati Staniszewski, founder and CEO of ElevenLabs, nominated Arrakis, which discovers AI agents running inside enterprises and blocks or revokes their actions in real time. Staniszewski also nominated Nowadays, an AI agent that plans corporate events for companies including Google, Amazon, and Notion.
Ryan Daniels, founder and CEO of Crosby, nominated Ampersand, which builds living models of business operations to evaluate agents against reality. The founding team includes alumni from Palantir, OpenAI, and Google.
Hardware, Healthcare, and Open Source Gain Traction
Alex Ratner, founder and CEO of Snorkel AI, nominated Agrippa, which is “building the future of US maritime logistics.” Cristóbal Valenzuela, founder and CEO of Runway, nominated Alljoined, which uses non-invasive hardware to decode what people see from brain activity, and Cartwheel, which turns video and text into 3D character animation for studio pipelines.
Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, nominated Mnemom, which creates signed, independent records of AI agent actions to build trust. Lin Qiao, founder and CEO of Fireworks AI, nominated Hercules, which lets customers build business applications by chatting with an agent using open-weight models.
Cerebral Valley Summits Have Spotted Winners Before
The Emergent list builds on a track record of identifying promising startups early. Cerebral Valley hosted Etched founder Robert Wachen at its second-ever summit in 2023; the company has since raised nearly $2 billion in funding. Chelsea Finn of Physical Intelligence presented at the 2024 summit after the company emerged from stealth, and Factory CEO Matan Grinberg is a past attendee.
Felicis Highlights Healthcare and Agent Workflows
Felicis, in its own analysis of the list, highlights agent-infrastructure startups and the challenge of getting workflows right. The firm also points to healthcare, bio, and creator tools as key areas. Aydin Senkut, Felicis’ founder and managing partner, discussed his takeaways from the list on the Newcomer podcast.
Founders Gather in San Francisco on November 12
Many of the nominated founders will attend the upcoming Cerebral Valley AI Summit on Thursday, November 12, in San Francisco.
