Emily in Paris is taking a bit of a detour! Season 5 of the Netflix hit will see Lily Collins‘ emily venturing outside of France for the first time in the series.

“The show really is about Emily’s relationship with Paris. So she kind of has to discover what Paris means to her by going other places,” creator Darren Star‘s co-showrunner Julien Fleming shared with Us Weekly in December 2024. “She’s always going to come back to Paris. But we did a lot in Italy. We did four episodes in Rome and then five in Paris and then one in venice. So half of the season took place outside of France, which was kind of a lot for us.”

Emily found herself at a crossroads throughout the season.

“she’s wondering if this is going to be her new life. Work is always a challenge but Rome is very much about romance,” he continued. “Also, Marcello plays a big part in this season, and Eugenio is amazing. We gave him a lot more to do this season and he’s really so good at it. He really stepped up massively and really dove into this character.”

Behind the Scenes of ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 4: From Sabrina Carpenter’s Song to horseback riding Challenges

Season 4 of Emily in Paris is full of glamorous moments, but bringing those scenes to life wasn’t always easy. Unit Production Manager, Lisa Fleming, recently shared some of the biggest challenges the team faced while filming the latest installment of the hit Netflix series.

One especially complex scene involved Sabrina Carpenter’s character, Lucy, performing her hit song “Espresso.” Fleming explained that the musical number was filmed across three separate locations.”I would say that was maybe the biggest challenge – the musical moment with Mindy singing ‘Espresso’ because with the boat, we shot that in one location. When she’s stepping off the boat, we shot that in a second location. When she’s walking into the party, that was a third location,” Fleming shared. “It was a matter of choreographing that number. But we were shooting those three things on three different days in three different places. So it was there was a lot to keep track of.”

another hurdle came with Emily’s romantic horseback riding date. While the scene appears seamless, coordinating the horses and ensuring everything looked perfect proved difficult. Details about this challenge were not fully elaborated upon in the provided text.

The Challenge of Filming on a Gondola

Fleming described the scene as a significant challenge due to the complexity of coordinating four actors, a proposal, and a reversal of fortune-all within the confines of a moving gondola. She initially expressed concern about pulling it off,but the innovative filming technique proved successful.

“That was a challenge that day with four characters and a proposal and a reversal of fortunes on a gondola. I was really worried about it but it went off very well,” Fleming explained to Us Magazine.

Actor Independence and the Filming Process

The key to the scene’s success lay in granting the actors a degree of independence during the take. The camera was physically attached to the gondola, and the actors were then left to perform the scene organically as the gondola navigated the canals. Fleming monitored the scene remotely, running alongside the gondola with a monitor.

“What we were doing was we essentially were mounting this camera to a gondola and putting the actors in. They just went off on their own,” Fleming said. “I had a little monitor and I’d be running alongside. But I think they liked it because they were independent of us. They got to sort of be in the moment for the whole take. But it was quite the process.”

This approach allowed the actors to fully immerse themselves in the scene, contributing to a more natural and compelling performance.

Key Takeaways:

* A complex scene in Emily in Paris Season 5 was filmed on a moving gondola.
* Director Leanne Fleming mounted a camera directly onto the gondola.
