England captain George Williams will undergo neck surgery, Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess said on Thursday.
The domestic season ends with the Super League Grand Final on Saturday, 3 October, with England’s first World Cup match against Tonga in Perth, Australia scheduled for 17 October.
Williams has been England captain since 2023.
Brian McDermott, appointed England head coach on Thursday, said he had no intentions to change captains prior to the World Cup.
Burgess said Williams will likely have surgery within the next week or two.
“It’s unfortunate for George and the club,” Burgess said. “There are a number of ways to look at it so we’ve decided to take the positive route.”
Given the injury’s nature, Burgess said the club is happy they identified it early.
Burgess added: “Hopefully he can make a great recovery and we’ll see him back [in action] – if it’s not this year, then hopefully next year.”
Williams’ leadership role with England and Warrington
Williams has captained England since 2023 and has been a key player for Warrington Wolves in the Super League.

His absence will affect both team leadership and on-field performance ahead of the World Cup.
Medical outlook and recovery timeline
Burgess indicated surgery is imminent but did not specify the exact procedure or medical facility.
The coach expressed hope for Williams’ return to play either later this year or in 2027, depending on recovery progress.
Will Williams miss the World Cup?
Based on Burgess’ comments, Williams is unlikely to play in the World Cup match against Tonga on 17 October, as surgery is expected within the next week or two.
Who might replace Williams as England captain?
The source does not name any potential replacement for Williams as England captain, though head coach Brian McDermott said he had no plans to change captains before the World Cup.
