Rebecca Gayheart Stands by Eric Dane During ALS Battle and Beyond

Rebecca Gayheart remained a steadfast presence in the life of her husband, Eric Dane, throughout his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), even calling off their divorce to provide support. Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease according to USA Today.

A Relationship Reconsidered

Gayheart initially filed for divorce from Dane in 2018 after 14 years of marriage, but she dismissed the filing in March 2025, just a month before Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis as reported by USA Today. She explained her decision to remain married, emphasizing the importance of family and support during a challenging time.

“I believe it’s important to not seem at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure,” Gayheart told E! News in April 2025 as detailed by E! Online. “We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years, and we had two beautiful kids. So I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”

A Champion and Caregiver

Dane himself acknowledged Gayheart’s unwavering support, stating she was his “biggest champion” and “most stalwart supporter.” He confided in her daily, leaning on her for strength throughout his illness according to USA Today. Gayheart became his primary caregiver, navigating the challenges of ALS and advocating for the care he needed.

In a November 2025 appearance on the “Broad Ideas” podcast, Gayheart explained her commitment to setting an example for their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. “I am definitely trying to show them that we show up for people no matter what. And he is our family. He is your father,” she said as reported by USA Today.

Legacy of Love and Support

Following Dane’s death, Gayheart shared throwback family photos on Instagram, along with a link to a GoFundMe campaign to support their daughters as noted by Us Magazine. His family remembered him as a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same battle.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the family stated according to Us Magazine. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
