Erik Per Sullivan Rejects ‘Buckets of Money’ to Return for ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Revival
The long-awaited return of the chaotic Wilkerson family to the screen is almost here, but one key member of the original ensemble is staying far away from the spotlight. Erik Per Sullivan, who captured hearts as the precocious Dewey in the hit Fox series Malcolm in the Middle, has reportedly turned down a massive financial incentive to appear in the upcoming Disney+ reboot.
A Principled Refusal: ‘Buckets of Money’
According to former co-star Jane Kaczmarek, the production team left no stone unturned in their attempts to coax Sullivan out of acting retirement. Kaczmarek revealed in an interview with The Guardian that the makers of the revival offered Sullivan “buckets of money” to return to his role as Dewey. Despite the lucrative offer, Sullivan simply replied, “No thank you.”
Sullivan, now 34, has maintained a low profile since his last acting credit in the 2010 film Twelve, which he filmed at the age of 18. While many child stars struggle with the transition to adulthood, Sullivan has pivoted entirely toward academia.
From Child Star to Harvard Scholar
Rather than returning to the entertainment industry, Sullivan has dedicated himself to the study of literature. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Victorian literature at Harvard University. Kaczmarek praised his dedication, noting that he is “studying Dickens and is an incredible student.”
Former co-star Frankie Muniz echoed this sentiment in November 2025, stating that Sullivan is “very happy in the life that he’s created outside of the entertainment world.” Muniz emphasized that the cast completely respects Sullivan’s decision to prioritize his personal and academic goals over a return to acting.

- Emy Coligado as Francis’ wife, Piama
- Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as the youngest siblings, Jamie and Kelly
- Keeley Karsten as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah
