Fearne Cotton Reflects on Radio 1 ‘Shame’ After Ian Watkins’ Crimes

Fearne Cotton has spoken about the feelings of “shame” and isolation she experienced while working at BBC Radio 1 following the arrest and subsequent conviction of her former boyfriend, Ian Watkins, the frontman of the band Lostprophets, for child sex offenses.

The Aftermath of the Arrest

Cotton, 44, dated Watkins in 2005, years before his crimes came to light in 2012. In her fresh book, Likeable, she details the difficult experience of being on air when news of the “horrible story” with a “tenuous and life-altering link” to her broke. She described feeling “glared at, stared at, yet utterly ignored” by colleagues.

“Are they all talking about me behind my back? Or am I a narcissist for thinking that?” she wrote in the book, reflecting on the internal turmoil she experienced at the time. Cotton recounts “shoving down the anger, the rage, the sorrow and tears” as the news continued to unfold.

Shame and Self-Silencing

Cotton attributed her feelings to the actions of “men who have shamed me, treated me badly and left me lumbered with it.” She explained that after leaving Radio 1 in 2015, she found herself altering her personality and diminishing her authentic self in an attempt to be liked.

“I stopped trying to be funny, I limited how much of myself I gave away, I diluted my personality to a weak imitation of the person I used to be. And then I quit,” she wrote. She further stated, “I stopped talking altogether. I believed at that point that the only way to be liked was to silence myself.”

Watkins’ Crimes and Death

Ian Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison in 2013 for multiple offenses, including attempted rape and possessing indecent images of children The Sun.
