Zach Merrett’s Managerial Shift and Future at Essendon
Essendon star Zach Merrett has changed representation, parting ways with manager Tom Petroro and returning to Nick Gieschen of CDG Sports Management. This move comes three months after a highly publicized and ultimately unsuccessful trade attempt to Hawthorn, raising questions about Merrett’s future with the Bombers.
Merrett’s Decision to Change Management
Six-time Essendon best and fairest winner Zach Merrett, 30, terminated his arrangement with Tom Petroro in January 2026, according to reports from Fox Sports and Reddit’s r/AFL. He has reconnected with Nick Gieschen, his former manager, who now operates under the CDG Sports Management banner alongside Paul Connors.
The split appears to be directly linked to the failed trade to Hawthorn in October, a deal that saw intense negotiations but ultimately fell through. Kane Cornes of SEN noted that the separation was a “blow up waiting to happen” given the circumstances of the trade period. SEN reported that if Merrett was managed by Paul Connors, a move to Hawthorn may have been more likely.
Essendon’s Perspective and Contract Offer
Despite the trade request, Essendon appears committed to retaining Merrett. Coach Brad Hird believes Merrett’s legacy at the club could be secured if he remains and contributes to a period of improvement. Hird stated that if Merrett helps rebuild the club and achieve success, his past trade request will be forgotten. Fox Sports reported that the club has offered Merrett a new deal worth approximately $1.1-1.2 million per season, extending his contract through 2027 and potentially beyond, with clauses to incentivize continued performance into his 30s.
Essendon’s Current Struggles
Essendon is currently facing a challenging period, having lost 14 consecutive games, with their last win coming in May of the previous year. This losing streak is second only to a 17-game stretch in 2016. The team’s defensive struggles are particularly concerning, conceding a high number of marks inside their defensive 50 in recent games. Defender Ben McKay dismissed suggestions of laziness within the team, attributing recent losses to decision-making and attention to detail. Fox Sports reported that McKay emphasized the need for senior players to lead the way.
Looking Ahead
Zach Merrett now faces a crucial decision regarding his future. He must weigh his desire to compete for a premiership against his commitment to Essendon. The club’s new contract offer provides a strong incentive to remain, but his long-term ambitions will ultimately determine his path. Essendon’s ability to improve its on-field performance will also be a significant factor in Merrett’s decision.
