President Karis Hosts Estonia’s Independence Day Reception at Estonia Theater

Tallinn, Estonia – President Alar Karis and First Lady Sirje Karis hosted a reception at the Estonia Theater and Concert Hall to celebrate Estonia’s Independence Day. The event, which took place on February 24th, marked a return to full-scale celebrations for the first time since 2019, and was the first Independence Day reception hosted by President Karis since assuming office in October 2021.

A Night of Culture and Celebration

Approximately 900 guests attended the reception, representing prominent figures from Estonian culture, sports, education, mental health, and politics. The evening’s program featured a concert directed by Priit Võygemast, with musical direction by Siim Aimla. Following the concert, President and Mrs. Karis greeted guests with a traditional handshake in the White Hall, while the Tallinn Police Orchestra provided musical accompaniment in the concert hall.

President Karis’s Presidency

Alar Karis assumed the presidency on October 11, 2021, becoming the sixth president of Estonia. Prior to his role as president, Karis served as Auditor General of Estonia from 2013 to 2018 and as director of the Estonian National Museum from 2018 to 2021. His career also includes positions as rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences (2003-2007) and the University of Tartu (2007-2012). Return to Tradition

The decision to hold the reception at the Estonia Theater signaled a return to pre-pandemic traditions. News ERR reported that this was the first full event held since 2019.
