Between 1950 and 1955 the pioneering French street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson was sent on assignments across europe for the magazines HarperS Bazaar, Life, Holiday and Paris Match. His candid images of ordinary people at a time of postwar reconstruction and rapacious change revealed the variety of life on the continent and in Britain – but also the developing sense of a shared identity across national borders. “Nowhere, probably, are as many differences crammed into so little space as in europe,” Cartier-Bresson wrote in his 1955 book The Europeans, wich pulled his images together and is now being reissued 70 years on.

The Europeans (Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson £40) is out now. To order a copy go to timesbookshop.co.uk. Free UK standard P&P on orders over £25. Special discount available for Times+ members
