European football pre-season tours in South Korea are facing diminishing box office returns as high ticket prices, squad rotation, and an oversaturated summer schedule test fan loyalty. According to ticket sales data from the 2024 Coupang Play Series, attendance figures for marquee fixtures have dropped significantly compared to previous years, reflecting a broader shift in consumer demand.

Attendance Declines Highlight Shifting Fan Demand

Fan turnout for summer exhibition matches in Seoul has cooled following years of near-guaranteed sellouts. During the July and August 2024 pre-season fixtures organized by Coupang Play, attendance varied sharply based on individual player appearances and opponent pedigree. The July 31 match featuring Premier League champions Manchester City against Team K리그 at Seoul World Cup Stadium drew 2만8036명 spectators, according to official event figures reported by Yonhap News. That total marked a stark drop from the 64,185 fans who attended Manchester City’s appearance against Atlético Madrid during the 2023 summer series.

Star Player Absences and Market Oversaturation

The dip in ticket sales stems from a combination of roster omissions and the proliferation of visiting international clubs. According to sports industry analysts, supporters are increasingly hesitant to pay premium prices when marquee names sit out or are rested during promotional fixtures. High-profile absences—including Manchester City midfielder Rodri and forward Erling Haaland, alongside FC Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane—reduced the immediate draw for matchgoers evaluating steep admission costs. Furthermore, industry observers note that as multiple European clubs schedule summer stops in South Korea year after year, the initial rarity value of hosting elite teams has faded.

Financial Pressures on Promoters and Clubs

Organizing high-profile friendlies involves substantial financial commitments that strain profitability for local promoters and K League participants. Industry sources close to the 2024 event report that Coupang Play paid an estimated 100억원 won in appearance fees alone to secure Manchester City for their tour stop. Similar cost pressures affected K League 1 side Jeju United, which hosted FC Bayern Munich on August 3, 2024, drawing 2만2519명 fans.
