Eva Longoria on Leaving L.A., Finding Freedom, and Why She’s Not Avoiding Perform
Eva Longoria, the actress and producer known for her role in Desperate Housewives and her recent directorial work, has been quietly building a life outside of the United States for the past few years. The shift, she explains, wasn’t a political one, but a natural progression driven by work and a changing atmosphere in Los Angeles.
A Changing Vibe in Los Angeles
Longoria, who rose to prominence even as living in Los Angeles, began to feel a shift in the city’s energy even before the COVID-19 pandemic. “I had my whole adult life here,” she told Marie Claire in November 2024. “But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to s–t on California—it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”
Life Between Mexico and Spain
Currently, Longoria, her husband José Bastón, and their son Santiago divide their time between Mexico, and Spain. She emphasized her privilege in being able to relocate, stating, “I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”
Work as the Catalyst
Despite speculation, Longoria clarified that her move wasn’t a reaction to the political climate in the United States. She explained on People.com that her work commitments led her to spend extended periods in Catalonia for the filming of Land of Women, followed by four months in Mexico for Searching for Mexico, and then back to Spain. “Now I’ve been there for years. So I just don’t like that it’s politicized,” she said.
Staying Busy on Both Sides of the Atlantic
Longoria continues to maintain a busy career, with recent roles in Only Murders in the Building and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Excellent, Very Poor Road Trip. Her move hasn’t slowed her down, but rather allowed her to pursue projects and a lifestyle that better suit her current priorities.
Looking Ahead
As Eva Longoria approaches her 50th birthday, she continues to defy expectations and embrace new challenges, both professionally and personally. Her decision to live and work internationally reflects a desire for freedom, flexibility, and a life lived on her own terms.
