Summer Mersinger, former commissioner at the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will step down as CEO of the Blockchain Association on October 16, 2026. Her departure follows the defeat of a key legislative priority in Congress earlier in the month, prompting a leadership transition that brings former chief executive Kristin Smith back to the crypto advocacy group as interim CEO.
Leadership Transition at the Blockchain Association
According to the Blockchain Association, Smith will return to helm the organization on an interim basis while retaining her existing responsibilities as president of the Solana Policy Institute.
“I came here from the CFTC because I believed this industry deserved clear rules of the road and a credible, unified voice making the case for them in Washington,” Mersinger stated regarding her departure.
During her tenure, the advocacy group highlighted her work advancing the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins Act, known as the GENIUS Act, alongside efforts to secure regulatory clarity from both the SEC and the CFTC.
Legislative Setbacks Drive Departure
The leadership change coincides with a major legislative roadblock on Capitol Hill. While the Blockchain Association pushed lawmakers to support the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in the Senate, the bill failed to secure the necessary votes from Democrats and Republicans during a cloture motion earlier in September 2026.

The organization’s announcement regarding Mersinger’s exit omitted mention of the stalled Digital Asset Market Clarity Act vote, focusing instead on her broader advocacy milestones. The Blockchain Association has not yet disclosed details regarding Mersinger’s professional plans following her departure at the end of the year.
