Jeff Dean is discussing a $1 billion financing round for his new artificial intelligence startup, Discovery Loop, at a valuation of approximately $10 billion, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Business Insider.
Startup Mission and Founding Team
Discovery Loop operates as a public benefit corporation. According to a statement posted by Dean on X, the company’s mission is to automate machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate discoveries and progress by executing thousands of experiments in parallel. A company press release issued on August 5 states that Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures are leading the initial funding round, with participation from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital. Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that Alphabet serves as a founding investor and cloud partner.

The startup brings together several researchers from Google and DeepMind. Sanjay Ghemawat, a longtime collaborator who joined Google in 1999, helped develop foundational distributed-computing technologies. Quoc Le, a founding member of Google Brain, contributed to deep learning, neural networks, and modern language models. Oriol Vinyals served as a leading researcher at Google DeepMind, focusing on sequence modeling and reinforcement learning. A pitch deck shared by Dean on X highlights the team’s academic standing, noting that Google Scholar rankings place Dean, Le, and Vinyals among the most highly cited AI researchers in the field.
Silicon Valley Exits and Massive AI Valuations
Discovery Loop’s early financial backing reflects a trend of Google and DeepMind researchers leaving established tech giants to command multibillion-dollar valuations for new artificial intelligence labs. David Silver, a former DeepMind researcher, raised $1.1 billion this year at a $5.1 billion valuation for Ineffable Intelligence, a lab focused on experience-based AI learning. Former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou reportedly secured funding at a $25 billion pre-money valuation for Reflection AI.

Additional ventures founded by former researchers have also drawn substantial capital. Periodic Labs, cofounded by former Google Brain researcher Ekin Dogus Cubuk and former OpenAI researcher Liam Fedus, has raised hundreds of millions of dollars. Meanwhile, Sakana AI, cofounded by former Google researchers Llion Jones and David Ha, achieved a $2.65 billion valuation last year. A representative for Jeff Dean declined to comment on the ongoing fundraising details for Discovery Loop.
