Peter Lee Leaves Microsoft Science For Mercedes Formula 1 AI Advisor Role

According to Fortune, the Mercedes Formula 1 team is set to welcome Peter Lee—who recently stated he is stepping down as president of Microsoft Science, plans—into a newly established AI advisor position. Lee spent 16 years at Microsoft shaping its science and research efforts, exploring how artificial intelligence can help doctors and scientists crack hard problems in the physical, biological, and medical sciences.

Four Goals Inside The Mercedes Garage

Lee indicated that his tenure at Mercedes will center around four primary objectives: applying artificial intelligence to resolve car physics challenges, dismantling organizational and data barriers between departments, creating financial and predictive data models, and advising the group on prospective regulatory oversight of artificial intelligence by the sport’s governing bodies. His exact title is still under discussion, but he is expected to join on a one-year contract with an option for a second.

I have always wanted to be a racer. When I was young, I grew up racing carts, Lee said. I’m completely thrilled, and I’m in disbelief that they would think of me for something like this. The Mercedes team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Broader Talent Shifts Across Technology And Racing

Lee’s move is further proof of how artificial intelligence is reshaping the job market, even at the highest levels of corporate America. A fierce race for skilled professionals has been triggered by the artificial intelligence boom, pushing non-Silicon Valley sectors to actively recruit specialized talent. In June, for example, Dr. James Smith, who once worked at Google’s artificial intelligence lab DeepMind, joined the Williams Formula 1 team as its new chief information officer.

Lee’s departure also comes amid a wave of exits from Microsoft this year as Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella reorients the company to win the enterprise and cloud sides of artificial intelligence. Ryan Roslansky, an executive vice president who also served as LinkedIn Chief Executive Officer, recently announced he is leaving, as is chief communications officer Frank X. Shaw. Past departures earlier in the year included the retirement of veteran leaders like Rajesh Jha, executive vice president of experiences and devices, and gaming chief Phil Spencer.

Shared Real-Time Pressures Across Medicine And Trackside Operations

The company noted that Lee’s mandate at Microsoft involved leveraging artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to speed up discoveries across physical, biological, and medical sciences. He worked on diagnostics, precision medicine, and clinician tools, including a project named InnerEye that sought to automate the laborious outlining of tumors and healthy tissue for radiation-treatment planning. Furthermore, he evaluated OpenAI’s GPT-4 prior to its public rollout to determine its medical applications. Time magazine honored Lee in 2024 by including him in its list of the 100 most influential people in health and life sciences.

Lee acknowledged that Formula 1 and healthcare are very different industries, but he said they share clear operational traits. In both healthcare delivery and in medical research, and in Formula 1, you are oftentimes in collaborative situations where a group of very well-trained people are working together with a deficit of information and having to make highly consequential rapid decisions, he said, adding that the central question is how best to inject technology into those environments to help rather than distract.
