Arrest and Charges Against John Kane

John Kane, 39, of Sparta, was taken into custody on Wednesday following an investigation led by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, according to prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II. Investigators allege that the sexual assault occurred on April 26, 2026. According to statements from the prosecutor’s office, the defendant transported the victim to the parking lot at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where the assault took place. Court documents verify that the offenses brought against him include four counts of second-degree sexual assault along with two counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities confirmed that the victim is not a student at Newark Academy.

Kane was hired as one of three varsity head coaches added to Newark Academy’s athletic staff for the 2025–26 school year, where he was listed as a coach for both the boys’ and girls’ varsity wrestling programs. Beyond his recent position in Livingston, Kane’s athletic and professional background spans multiple local programs and districts. The Township of Livingston, the West Essex Regional School District, and the Livingston Youth Wrestling Program are among his past associations, as stated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Additionally, he was involved with The Work-Family Connection, an after-school program serving Morris, Warren, Union, Somerset, and Hunterdon counties. As a high school athlete, Kane spent four years as a varsity wrestler at Livingston High School, capturing both district and regional titles during his senior year.
