Expro Launches Velonix for Automated Pipeline Pigging Control

Expro launched Velonix, an optimized pipeline pig control system designed to automatically manage pig velocity, reduce costly re-runs, and enhance safety across low-flow, high-flow, and no-flow pipeline environments, according to company announcements released on September 8, 2026. The technology combines clamp-on SONAR measurement with automated closed-loop flow control to eliminate the manual interventions that traditionally cause speed excursions and inspection failures in pipeline integrity campaigns.

How Velonix Automates Pipeline Pigging Operations

Conventional pigging operations frequently struggle to maintain consistent pig velocity when pipeline flow conditions fluctuate or disappear entirely. According to Expro, Velonix solves this operational uncertainty by utilizing a non-intrusive, clamp-on SONAR meter that continuously tracks pig speed. When the system detects variations, it automatically adjusts pipeline flow through a digitally controlled skid, keeping the inspection tool locked within its optimal velocity window throughout the run.

By removing reliance on manual flow adjustments, the automated system prevents speed excursions that typically compromise inspection data quality. According to Expro, maintaining a stable velocity window eliminates the need for disruptive and expensive re-runs, allowing customers to finish pipeline integrity campaigns with greater efficiency.

Field Testing and Industry Deployment

Following extension field testing, the technology has demonstrated a consistent ability to deliver smooth, stable pig runs across diverse pipeline environments, according to Andrei Ion, Vice President of Well Flow Management at Expro. Ion stated that the system successfully maintains target velocities, avoids speed excursions, and eliminates costly re-runs to increase the overall reliability of pipeline intervention through data intelligent services.

Andrew McNiel, Senior Technical Sales Manager at Expro, is scheduled to present a dedicated paper titled ‘Development of Velonix® by Expro’ at the International Pipeline Conference & Expo in Calgary, scheduled for September 21–25.

Strategic Impact on Pipeline Integrity

The commercial rollout of Velonix underlines Expro’s continued investment in intelligent automation and digital technologies. Automated velocity control directly targets the primary cause of poor data acquisition, helping operators improve safety and environmental performance during pipeline integrity operations.
