European Heatwave Sets Records, UN Warns of Climate Crisis Link
The European heatwave, which shattered temperature records across multiple countries, has prompted urgent warnings from the United Nations about its connection to the climate crisis, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). France recorded its hottest day on record on 24 June, with a national average of 30.0°C, surpassing the previous day’s record and breaking the 2019 and 2003 benchmarks, Météo-France reported. In the western town of Pulluau, temperatures reached 43.8°C, while overnight highs also hit new national records, prompting red alerts for 58 departments, the French government said.
Record Temperatures Across Europe
Spain also experienced its hottest June days on record, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in several regions, according to the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET. The UK’s Met Office issued a red extreme heat warning for 24 and 25 June, with a provisional June daily high of 36.1°C in Gosport, southern England. Germany and Switzerland followed suit, with red alerts issued for major cities like Bonn, Frankfurt, Cologne, Geneva, Basel, and Zurich.

“The savage heatwave has the fingerprints of the climate crisis all over it,” said UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell, urging immediate action to curb fossil fuel use and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. The WMO warned that temperatures across western, central, and southern Europe could remain 3°C to 10°C above seasonal averages for the next two weeks, with daily highs exceeding 35°C in many areas and 40°C in parts of the southwest.
Health Risks and Drowning Deaths
The WMO highlighted the deadly risks of the heatwave, noting 40 reported drowning deaths in France linked to the extreme temperatures. Armel Castellan, an extreme heat services technical advisor at the WMO and World Health Organization (WHO), emphasized that nighttime temperatures above 20°C—known as “tropical nights”—pose significant health risks. “A day that reaches 36°C but stays above 25°C overnight carries a much higher health risk than a day peaking at 38°C but cooling to 18°C,” he explained.
The WHO estimates 489,000 heat-related deaths annually between 2000 and 2019, underscoring the growing threat of extreme heat. As the heatwave intensifies, health systems across Europe are preparing for increased demand, with calls for measures to reduce heat exposure in homes and workplaces.
UN Calls for Global Action on Heat and Climate
UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the crisis during a keynote speech at London Climate Action Week, stating, “We have just lived through the eleven hottest years ever recorded.” He warned that El Niño, a weather pattern characterized by warming Pacific Ocean temperatures, could exacerbate heat and disrupt food and water systems. The WMO has updated its forecasts to reflect El Niño’s potential impact, though its effects are typically more pronounced outside Europe.

The UN’s Call to Action on Extreme Heat, launched in July 2024, emphasizes early warning systems, public education, and infrastructure resilience. The WMO’s “Early Warnings for All” initiative aims to ensure timely alerts and clear guidance for vulnerable populations. “Early warnings must lead to early action,” said the agency, urging governments to protect workers, safeguard health services, and build climate-resilient cities.
Future Projections and Regional Impacts
Regional climate monitoring centers predict prolonged heat, with tropical nights and strong thunderstorms with hail expected in some areas. The WMO warned that without urgent climate action, extreme heat will become more frequent and severe. As the heatwave shifts across Europe, the focus remains on mitigating its immediate effects while addressing the long-term drivers of the climate crisis.
