A severe heatwave swept across the Valencian Community in Spain, driving apparent temperatures as high as 63 degrees Celsius and contributing to a sharp rise in heat-related deaths, according to regional meteorological agencies and public health data.

The intense episode of extreme heat combined high humidity and wind, pushing apparent temperatures to dangerous extremes, according to the Valencian Association of Meteorology (Avamet). Municipalities such as Villena, Orihuela, and Quesa recorded actual air temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius, marking the warmest day of the year for those areas. Coastal zones experienced overnight minimum temperatures lingering between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius alongside humidity levels exceeding 90 percent.

Mortality Impact and Geographic Toll

The prolonged heat took a severe human toll across the region. According to estimates from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute, 253 people died from causes attributable to high temperatures between June 21 and July 23. The data shows that 134 victims were men and 119 were women, with the vast majority over the age of 65.

Alicante emerged as the hardest-hit province, recording 136 deaths. Valencia followed with 73 fatalities, while Castellón registered 44. The deadliest seven-day stretch occurred between July 6 and July 12, coinciding with a broader national heatwave that accounted for an estimated 104 deaths in the region during that single week.

Meteorological Extremes and Thermal Bursts

The combination of stagnant air and high moisture created severe microclimates. Avamet highlighted Sumacàrcer as a prime example, where an air temperature of 40.7 degrees Celsius paired with a 57 percent relative humidity produced an estimated apparent temperature of 63 degrees Celsius in unventilated spaces. Nighttime offered little relief, with readings staying above 35 degrees Celsius past midnight in locations like Agullent, Parcent, and Tàrbena.

Adding to the severe conditions, thermal bursts associated with local storms swept through the area. These meteorological events pushed pockets of intensely hot air downward, triggering sudden temperature spikes and wind gusts reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour in parts of Alicante province.
