Formula 1 Returns to Portugal: The Portuguese Grand Prix Confirmed for 2027 & 2028
In a thrilling development for motorsport enthusiasts, Formula 1 has officially announced the return of the Portuguese grand Prix to the racing calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The confirmation, jointly released on December 16th by the FIA and Formula 1 management, was accompanied by strong support from the Portuguese Government through the Ministry of the Economy, signaling a important commitment to bringing the pinnacle of motorsport back to the nation.
Portimão to Host the High-Octane action
The autódromo Internacional do Algarve, located in Portimão, will once again be the venue for these eagerly anticipated races. The circuit previously hosted prosperous events in 2020 and 2021, stepping in during the logistical challenges of the pandemic, and quickly became a favorite amongst both drivers and fans. It’s demanding layout, characterized by challenging corners and elevation changes, consistently receives high praise for providing exciting racing from the first lap to the checkered flag.
Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his enthusiasm for the return, stating, “I am thrilled to see Portimão back on the F1 calendar, igniting the passion of our great Portuguese fans. The track offers excitement from start to finish and its energy is infectious!”
Economic Boost for Portugal
The Portuguese government is actively investing in the event, with the Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro de Almeida, confirming a financial commitment of under 50 million euros. This investment will cover essential permit fees and operational costs associated with hosting the Grand Prix. Though, the economic benefits extend far beyond this initial outlay. Estimates project that the event will generate approximately 140 million euros in tax revenue, driven by a surge in tourism, increased demand for accommodation and transportation, and the broader economic activity stimulated by the high-profile event.
A Historic Return After a Long Absence
Portugal’s presence on the Formula 1 calendar has been intermittent. The nation experienced a 24-year absence from the sport, stretching from 1996 until its unexpected return in 2020. During the 2020 and 2021 races at Portimão, British racing icon Lewis Hamilton secured victory in both events, etching his name into the track’s history and creating lasting memories for fans.
The Future of Estoril: A Potential Revival?
While the focus is currently on portimão, the future of the historic Autódromo do Estoril remains a topic of discussion. Minister Castro de almeida clarified that initial discussions with the FIA did not include Estoril, but left the door open for potential future considerations regarding its utilization. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Cascais, Nuno Piteira Lopes, has proposed an ambitious plan to revitalize the Estoril circuit, offering €12.5 million for a 75-year lease. This proposal envisions a public tender aimed at attracting 150 million euros in private investment, with the ultimate goal of bringing formula 1 back to Estoril as early as 2028. Though, significant infrastructure upgrades will be crucial to realizing this vision.
Political Success and global Recognition
The return of the Portuguese Grand Prix was initially foreshadowed by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during the PSD’s Festa do Pontal in Quarteira, indicating that plans were already well underway. The official confirmation represents a significant political and sporting achievement for the current government, promising to elevate Portugal’s international profile and provide a considerable boost to the national economy. This is undoubtedly fantastic news for motorsport fans worldwide, solidifying portugal’s position as a prominent destination for high-octane racing events.
