Family of Boy With Rare Condition Raise Funds for Grand Appeal

The Birth and Sudden Diagnosis of Ralph

Elin’s pregnancy proceeded without complications or concerns, and initial scans showed normal development. According to The Grand Appeal, Ralph appeared healthy and happy immediately after birth. However, routine discharge checks ten hours later revealed unexpectedly low oxygen levels. Staff at the initial facility fetched a second monitor to confirm the reading before transferring Ralph to a Special Care Baby Unit. When standard measures failed to raise his oxygen levels, medical teams intubated him and contacted Cardiff’s neonatal transfer team.

Specialists suspected a serious congenital heart defect and consulted the cardiology team at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff. Transporting Ralph carried significant risks, with clinicians warning his parents that he might not survive the journey. Upon arrival in Cardiff, physicians diagnosed Transposition of the Great Arteries, a rare and life-threatening heart defect requiring immediate specialist surgery available only at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Emergency Interventions at Bristol Children’s Hospital

Just one hour after arriving in Cardiff, medical personnel transferred Ralph to Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he arrived in the early hours of the morning. According to The Grand Appeal, Ralph underwent an emergency balloon septostomy within an hour of arrival to create or enlarge an opening in the wall between his upper heart chambers. At nine days old, he moved to the Dolphin Ward to prepare for open-heart surgery.

Further medical investigations identified additional cardiac complications, including three ventricular septal defects (holes in the heart wall), a bidirectional Patent Foramen Ovale carrying stroke risks, and a patent ductus arteriosus where a blood vessel failed to close naturally after birth. On New Year’s Eve Eve, far from home, Elin and Dylan received accommodation at Paul’s House through The Grand Appeal while Ralph remained in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Recovery and Ongoing Care

Ralph’s open-heart surgery lasted ten hours and was ultimately successful, according to The Grand Appeal. Following five days in intensive care and a short stay on the Dolphin Ward, the family returned home less than three weeks after their initial ordeal began. He now requires only annual cardiac checkups closer to home.

To express gratitude for the lifesaving care and family support they received, Elin, Dylan, and three family members participated in the Great Bristol Half Marathon on May 10, 2026, raising funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital and The Grand Appeal.
