Phantom Blade Zero developer S-Game prepares to debut nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay during an upcoming Sony State of Play broadcast, even as community anger over PlayStation’s shift away from physical media dominates chatrooms and social media. According to reports surrounding the upcoming digital showcase, the studio’s action game faces potential overshadowing from an ongoing gamer backlash against the phase-out of game discs.
PlayStation Physical Media Backlash Overshadows Showcase
Sony’s decision to phase out physical discs for new PlayStation releases starting in 2028 has sparked widespread backlash across the gaming community, with critics organizing online petitions and boycott campaigns. According to a statement released by Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company is responding to changing consumer trends. Shuman stated on the official PlayStation blog that new games arriving on the PlayStation Store and retail will launch exclusively in digital formats. Recent financial results from Sony indicate that 82% of full-game sales on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are digital downloads. Furthermore, Circana senior director and industry advisor Mat Piscatella reported that only seven PlayStation games sold more than 100,000 physical units in the United States so far this year.
Despite the resistance, analysts consulted by IGN suggest that Sony is unlikely to reverse its policy. Digital sales yield significantly higher profit margins for the company. For a first-party title sold physically, Sony retains roughly 65% of revenue after retailer cuts and manufacturing costs, whereas digital sales through the PlayStation Store yield 100% of the proceeds. Independent trade groups have criticized the shift; the British Digital Entertainment and Retail Association characterized the move as a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice. Meanwhile, online communities and accounts such as Does it play? have utilized social media platforms to urge boycotts and flood corporate streams with critical hashtags.
Phantom Blade Zero Gameplay and Donnie Yen Involvement
Set against this backdrop of digital transition, S-Game will showcase extended footage of Phantom Blade Zero, highlighting high-speed action and martial arts choreography. Soulframe Liang, founder and CEO of S-Game, confirmed that martial arts film star Donnie Yen serves as a creative advisor for the project. Yen joined the development team in 2023 to assist with combat design for authentic kung fu mechanics. Additionally, Yen portrays Mó Yuan, the protagonist’s father, providing both facial capture and motion capture performances for the game.
Liang noted that the upcoming State of Play presentation will introduce central characters previously unseen in promotional material while emphasizing player customization options. Rumors regarding a surprise demo release have also circulated following the brief appearance and subsequent removal of a demo landing page on the PlayStation Store. The broadcast will provide a detailed look at the opening segments of the game’s narrative journey.
