Brisk Walking Slashes Risk of Heart Rhythm Problems, Study Finds

Walking at a brisker pace may significantly reduce the risk of developing heart rhythm problems, according to research published in the journal Heart. The findings suggest that brisk walking could be a safe and effective way to reduce arrhythmia, a condition where the heart beats too quickly or too slowly.

Study Details and Methodology

Researchers from the University of Glasgow analyzed data from 420,925 individuals participating in the UK Biobank. Walking speed was self-reported through questionnaires. The study followed participants for 13 years, tracking the development of various heart rhythm abnormalities, including atrial fibrillation (AF), abnormally unhurried heartbeat, and ventricular arrhythmias.

Defining Walking Pace

Walking pace was categorized as follows:

  • Slow Pace: Less than three miles per hour (approximately 5 kilometers per hour)
  • Average Pace: Three to four miles per hour (approximately 5 to 6 kilometers per hour)
  • Brisk Pace: More than four miles per hour (approximately 6.5 kilometers per hour)

The study found that approximately 6.5% of participants walked at a slow pace, 53% at an average pace, and 41% at a brisk pace.

Key Findings: Reduced Risk of Arrhythmias

Over the 13-year study period, 36,574 participants (9% of the total) developed heart rhythm problems. After accounting for demographic and lifestyle factors, researchers discovered that:

  • An average walking pace was associated with a 35% reduction in the risk of heart rhythm problems compared to a slow pace.
  • A brisk walking pace was associated with a 43% reduction in the risk of heart rhythm problems compared to a slow pace.
  • The risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) was reduced by almost half (46%) among those who walked at the fastest pace.

the study indicated that increasing the amount of time spent walking at a fast pace was linked to a 27% decrease in arrhythmia risk.

Metabolic and Inflammatory Factors

The research suggests a potential link between walking pace and metabolic and inflammatory factors. Approximately one-third of arrhythmia cases were influenced by these factors. Faster walking may reduce obesity and inflammation, thereby lowering the risk of arrhythmias.

Participant Characteristics

Individuals who walked at faster speeds were more likely to be male, live in less deprived areas, and have healthier lifestyles. It’s critical to note that the study was observational and does not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship.

Study Limitations

The study relied on self-reported walking speeds, which may be subject to inaccuracies. The sample population was not fully diverse, with a median age of 55, 55% female participants, and 97% identifying as white.

Professor Jill Pell of the University of Glasgow stated, “This study is the first to investigate the mechanisms underlying the association between walking pace and arrhythmias and to provide evidence for the possible role of metabolic and inflammatory factors… Cumulative epidemiological studies have shown that walking pace is inversely associated with metabolic factors, such as obesity, fasting blood sugar, diabetes, and high blood pressure, which in turn are associated with the risk of arrhythmias.”

Implications and Future Research

These findings reinforce the importance of promoting faster walking as part of exercise recommendations. Further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms and to determine the optimal walking pace for reducing the risk of heart rhythm problems.

The UK Biobank, funded by organizations including the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, and British Heart Foundation, continues to provide valuable data for cardiovascular research.
