Fatal Crash Closes SH1 Between Tokoroa and Taupō
State Highway 1 between Tokoroa and Taupō has reopened after a fatal crash involving a car and a truck early on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Humphrey Road, between Ongaroto Road and SH30, around 11:20 p.m. On Tuesday, April 21. Police confirmed one person was found deceased at the scene, while another sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.
The NZ Transport Agency reported the road was closed around midnight and reopened by approximately 10:00 a.m. The following morning under a temporary speed limit. Fire and Emergency Northern Shift Manager Garreth Lewis stated that firefighters arrived at 11:24 p.m., with three fire engines and two support vehicles responding to assist police and ambulance crews.
The NZ Transport Agency’s journey planner confirmed the closure and subsequent reopening of the section of SH1.
