FBI Investigates Kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother, Contacts Mexican Authorities
The FBI is actively investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” display co-host Savannah Guthrie, and has been in contact with Mexican law enforcement officials, according to law enforcement sources. Nancy Guthrie was reportedly forcibly taken from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of February 1st.
Suspected Kidnapping and Investigation
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos believes Nancy Guthrie was specifically targeted in the apparent abduction . The FBI has dedicated border liaison agents working directly with their Mexican counterparts on the case. The FBI’s legal attaché office in Mexico City serves as a central point of communication between FBI headquarters, the U.S. Embassy, and Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office.
Collaboration with Mexican Authorities
The FBI suboffice most relevant to the investigation is located in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, which borders Arizona. Tucson is approximately 60 miles from the Nogales border crossing . Although there is currently no indication that Nancy Guthrie has been taken into Mexico, the investigation extends into Mexican territory.
Mexican Government Response
Mexican officials have stated they have no information suggesting Nancy Guthrie is currently in Mexico. Gustavo Rómulo Salas Chávez, the attorney general of Sonora, confirmed on Thursday that they have “no information to suggest that this person is in Mexican territory, specifically in Sonora.” Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security, reiterated this statement, adding that there is “no indication, nor any line of investigation that would suggest she was in our country” .
Evidence and Leads
Investigators are analyzing DNA found on a glove recovered from a field about two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home. The glove appears to match one worn by a suspect captured on doorbell camera footage the night of the disappearance . The FBI has collected approximately 16 gloves from the area, but the one with the DNA profile is distinct. Preliminary DNA test results are pending official confirmation before an “unknown male profile” is entered into the FBI database.
Ongoing Search and Rewards
The Madres Buscadoras De Sonora (Searching Mothers of Sonora), a local organization, has been contacted by the Guthrie family and is assisting in the search. They have posted a message on social media requesting information about Guthrie’s whereabouts. A reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the disappearance has been increased to $102,500, thanks to an anonymous donation, in addition to a $100,000 reward offered by the FBI .
Family Cooperation and Investigation Status
Savannah Guthrie, along with her siblings and their spouses, have been cleared as suspects in the case and have fully cooperated with investigators . Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of an accomplice aiding the suspected kidnapper seen in the doorbell camera footage. Efforts are ongoing to recover additional video footage from cameras on the property.
