Vinay Prasad Departs FDA Amidst Vaccine and Drug Review Controversies

Dr. Vinay Prasad, the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Chief Medical and Scientific Officer and Director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), will be leaving the agency at the end of April 2026. This marks the second time he has departed the FDA in less than a year, following disagreements over the review of vaccinations and specialty drugs for rare diseases. [1]

Recent Departure and Background

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary announced Prasad’s departure to FDA staff on Friday, stating he would return to his academic position at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). [1] Prasad’s previous temporary removal in July 2025 stemmed from conflicts with biotech executives, patient groups, and allies of former President Donald Trump. He was subsequently reinstated with the support of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. And Commissioner Makary.

Prasad’s Tenure and Regulatory Approach

Dr. Prasad, a hematologist-oncologist and health researcher, assumed the role of Director of CBER in May 2025. [1] Prior to joining the FDA, he was a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF, and previously held a similar position at Oregon Health & Science University. [3] [1]

Throughout his time at the FDA, Prasad has presented a complex regulatory approach. He collaborated with Commissioner Makary to expedite FDA drug reviews, while simultaneously implementing new warnings and study requirements for certain biotech drugs and vaccines, including COVID-19 shots. Education and Early Career

Vinayak “Vinay” Kashyap Prasad received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University, followed by a medical degree from the University of Chicago and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.
