FERM FOOD Expands Production Capacity with Acquisition of Former Orkla Facility

BÆKKE, Denmark – March 11, 2026 – Danish ingredient producer FERM FOOD is set to significantly expand its production capabilities with the acquisition of Orkla’s former manufacturing site in Skovlund, Denmark. The deal, effective April 1, 2026, will enable FERM FOOD to meet growing global demand for its fermented plant-based ingredients .

Accelerating Demand Drives Expansion

According to FERM FOOD CEO Jens Legarth, the acquisition is a direct response to faster-than-expected global interest in functional fermented food ingredients . “We have outgrown our current facilities. With the Skovlund site we will be able to supply many more food producers in Denmark and abroad,” Legarth stated.

Increased Production Capacity

The Skovlund facility is expected to reach an annual production capacity of up to 20,000 tonnes, supplementing FERM FOOD’s existing capacity at its Vejen, Denmark location . The company will begin producing ingredients such as fermented oats, rye, fava beans, and rapeseed cake shortly after taking over the facility .

Fermentation Technology and Applications

FERM FOOD utilizes solid-state fermentation, a process that uses lactic acid bacteria to transform plant-based crops and byproducts into functional ingredients. This technology enhances digestibility, increases vitamin and mineral availability, and reduces anti-nutritional factors .

The resulting ingredients are used in a wide range of food applications, including bread, ready-to-eat vegetables, hybrid meat products, plant-based alternatives, and salads . FERM FOOD’s ingredients offer benefits such as improved shelf life, binding capacity, and nutritional value.

Global Reach and Technology

FERM FOOD’s parent company, Fermentationexperts A/S, has patented the solid-state fermentation technology and operates facilities in the US, Malaysia, Denmark, and Ukraine . This international experience forms the foundation for FERM FOOD’s growth and expansion.
