Van Persie Faces Pressure as Feyenoord Struggles for Consistency
Rotterdam – Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie is under increasing scrutiny as the team battles a recent dip in form, compounded by a growing injury list. Despite a recent victory against Excelsior, concerns remain about the team’s mental state and tactical consistency, particularly ahead of crucial upcoming matches, including the Klassieker against Ajax.
Support for Van Persie is Conditional
Analyst Michel van Egmond suggests that regaining the support of Feyenoord’s passionate fanbase, known as The Legion, is largely dependent on a strong start to matches. “There is no audience from which it is easier to obtain support, which is simply to show within five minutes that you are going to do your best. That’s all it takes, De Kuip will have your back in no time,” Van Egmond stated according to Voetbalzone.
Concerns Over Performance and Mentality
However, club watcher Martijn Krabbendam paints a less optimistic picture of the atmosphere leading up to the Excelsior match. He observed a lack of visible stress or anger among supporters before the game, but was shocked by Feyenoord’s sluggish start. “The match starts, then it looked like Excelsior City. They just tapped the ball and Feyenoord ran after it. I thought: how is that possible? I’ve never seen this in De Kuip. At halftime I had no idea how the players should turn this around,” Krabbendam noted.
Van Egmond attributes much of Feyenoord’s current struggles to a mental block. “This is all in the heads of their players. The fear blocks them, of course they sense the pressure. They craft it way too difficult, just accelerate from minute one, throw out a few tackles and then the stadium is behind you. Then Excelsior gets scared to death and it’s over.”
Defensive Issues and Tactical Approach
The recent match against Excelsior saw Van Persie deploy an unconventional defensive pairing of Thijs Kraaijeveld and Jakub Moder in the center of defense, due to the suspension of Anel Ahmedhodzic and the continued absence of Jeremiah St. Juste through injury as reported by Voetbalzone. Tsuyoshi Watanabe was also unavailable for selection.
Former international Ruud Gullit highlighted a lack of defensive training and tactical patterns within the team, drawing a comparison to his time at AC Milan. “I’m going to say it again, at Milan we trained on defense almost every day. We had colors on different parts of the field, we stood in formation and where the ball came we had to move compactly to it. We did that a lot. The offensive was just combining. Every day it was defense, defense and defense. We trained for that every day at Milan,” Gullit explained.
Looking Ahead to the Klassieker
Despite the challenges, Gullit remains supportive of Van Persie. “I hope Van Persie can do it, I will continue to support him. It’s not easy for him with all those injuries. The match on Sunday will be a benchmark.” The upcoming Klassieker against Ajax will undoubtedly serve as a critical test for Van Persie and his team, as they aim to solidify their position in the Eredivisie standings.
Feyenoord is currently level on points with NEC and just two points ahead of Ajax in the Eredivisie table .
