Fidji Simo Exits Executive Role at OpenAI
Fidji Simo, the executive leading OpenAI’s applications division, is stepping down from her full-time post to move into a part-time advisory position. Simo, who joined the firm in 2025 after serving as CEO of Instacart, announced the transition on Thursday. She cited a need to focus on her recovery from a chronic illness, marking a significant leadership shift as OpenAI races to scale commercial products against rivals like Anthropic.
A Personal Battle with Chronic Illness
Simo has been on medical leave for three months. In a post on X, she explained that her recovery from postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS)—a condition diagnosed in 2019—has been more complex than she initially anticipated. POTS can cause dizziness, fainting, and an elevated heart rate.
“It has been a jarring experience to spend my days helping build the future while simultaneously navigating a disabling disease that still has no cure,” Simo wrote. Her time away from the office, she noted, clarified that prioritizing her health is essential for a full recovery.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the news on X with both sadness and appreciation. “i am really sad about this and very grateful for all fidji has done for openai, and even grateful for her friendship and who she is as a person,” Altman wrote.
Refining the Commercial Roadmap
During her tenure, Simo’s primary mandate was commercializing research, transforming advanced AI models into sustainable business offerings by streamlining internal operations to favor enterprise productivity.
According to Business Insider, Simo pushed staff during an all-hands meeting to avoid “side quests” and focus strictly on core products. This directive preceded the company’s decision to wind down its Sora video generation application. Instead, OpenAI has shifted resources toward coding tools like Codex, directly positioning the firm to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code.
From Meta and Instacart to AI
Before arriving at OpenAI, Simo was the CEO of Instacart, where she steered the company through its initial public offering. Her resume also features more than a decade of experience at Meta, formerly Facebook.
Simo’s departure arrives at a sensitive moment for OpenAI. As the firm eyes potential future public market milestones and faces mounting pressure to boost revenue, her transition to an advisory role is designed to maintain continuity in product strategy while allowing her to step back from the intensity of a full-time executive schedule.
