The Filzmoos Theatre Group launches its upcoming production of the comedy “The Balcony Scene” on Oct. 8 at the Mützenhalle Filzmoos, marking the third staging for the newly re-established local society. The production brings a 1999 Munich setting to the stage, combining computer technology in its infancy, and an unexpected marriage proposal delivered through the mail.
Romance and Chaos in Millennium Munich
Directed by Veronika Pernthaner Maeke, “The Balcony Scene” was co-created by Antony Marriott and places its characters in a changing technological landscape at the turn of the millennium. The story kicks off when a marriage proposal lands in the mailbox, although only encouraging words were supposed to be there. “Many lovable people meet at the wrong time,” Pernthaner Maeke said, describing the comedic dynamic of the production. The staging features early computers and primitive online matchmaking services, alongside a large display hinting that romance can be calculated scientifically.
A Remarkable 15-Year Community Comeback
The staging represents a rapid resurgence for the Filzmoos troupe, which reformed in 2024 after a 15-year hiatus. The group’s first production drew approximately 2,000 audience members. That success was followed last year by a revised version of the traditional folk play “The Three Polar Bears.” Today, the society includes more than 25 members spanning seasoned performers and newcomers, preserving a local performance tradition that dates back to the ensemble’s first staging in 1989.
Performance Schedule and Cast Details
The ensemble features Johanna Pilz in the role of Constance Schönfeld, Eva Maria Salchegger as her secretary Diana Prinz, and Herbert Rettenwender as the romantic Jeremias Gruber. Opening night is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Additional evening performances will take place on Oct. 9, 10, 13, 14, 16, and 17, with matinee shows scheduled for Oct. 11 and Oct. 17 at 2:00 p.m. Doors open one hour prior to each curtain time, with seating assigned at the venue.
