Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis to Shut Down on October 6
Square Enix will shut down Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis on October 6, according to an official announcement from the game’s production team. The mobile and PC title, which launched in December 2023, will cease all operations on that date, and the company has already suspended all real-money transactions within the game.
Production Costs and Visual Quality Drive Shutdown Decision
Producer Shoichi Ishikawa attributed the closure to a struggle to balance development costs with player demand. In a Producer’s Letter, Ishikawa stated that the team found it difficult to maintain the “ideal balance between visual quality and development costs” while attempting to encourage party diversity through gameplay balance.

Ishikawa specifically noted that delivering high-quality equipment visuals remained a priority because of how passionate the community is regarding the appearance of Final Fantasy VII characters. However, the financial burden of maintaining these standards against the demand for new character weapons and gear became unsustainable for the live-service model.
Impact on the Final Fantasy VII Remake Timeline
Ever Crisis served as a narrative bridge, recreating events from the original 1997 game and spinoffs including Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, and the mobile-exclusive Before Crisis.
The game also introduced original storylines, such as the history of a group of SOLDIERs featuring a young Sephiroth. Because characters from Ever Crisis—such as Glenn Lodbrok—have appeared in the remake series, the October 6 shutdown removes the primary way for players to access the expanded lore and backstories of these figures.
Game Mechanics and Development Pedigree
Unlike the mainline console entries, Ever Crisis operated as a free-to-play title utilizing a “gacha” system. Players spent in-game crystals to randomly acquire gear and characters. Despite its mobile format, the project featured high-level involvement from original series creators, including writer Katsushige Nojima and creative director Tetsuya Nomura.
- Shutdown Date: October 6
- Status of Purchases: All real-money transactions suspended
- Platforms: iOS, Android, PC
- Core Content: Re-tellings of FFVII, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, and Before Crisis
The Future of Ever Crisis Narrative
With the servers going offline, the community has expressed hope that Square Enix will find a way to preserve the game’s unique stories. While no official plan for a standalone release or archival version has been announced, the integration of Ever Crisis characters into the broader remake project suggests the narrative threads remain relevant to the franchise’s current trajectory.
