Square enix will continue to utilize Unreal Engine 4 for final Fantasy VII Rebirth, despite previous consideration of an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5. producer Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the decision, stating the team’s extensive modifications to Unreal Engine 4 and familiarity with the engine outweigh the benefits of transitioning to newer technology.
“We’re using Unreal engine 4, but we’ve done a lot of tweaking,” Hamaguchi explained. “It’s better to have something we already know how to work with and tweaked to suit our needs.” This approach allows the progress team to focus on optimizing performance and delivering a high-quality experience within a known framework.
Hamaguchi also addressed the ongoing development of a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth port for Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console. A playable version currently exists, but notable work remains to ensure a stable framerate and maintain the quality standards established with Final fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on other platforms.
The team faces the challenge of optimizing the game’s demanding visuals and gameplay for the Switch 2’s hardware. Achieving a consistent and enjoyable experience for players will require considerable effort in refining the port.
