Journalist Gaston Edul reported that the AFA (Argentine Football Association) is worried that playing in the Spanish capital would essentially supply Spain a “home game” advantage, potentially impacting the fairness of the competition. UEFA released a statement confirming they are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with participating teams and local authorities. The statement also indicated that all other European matches scheduled in the coming weeks are currently planned to proceed as scheduled. Regarding the Finalissima, UEFA is cooperating with Conmebol and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to carefully assess developments.

“Uefa is closely monitoring the situation and is in touch with participating teams and local authorities where necessary,” the UEFA statement read. “All matches due to take place in Europe in the upcoming weeks are currently planned to be played as scheduled. With regards to the Finalissima scheduled for 27 March, Uefa is monitoring and carefully assessing all developments of the situation in cooperation with Conmebol and the LOC.”

The current situation stems from the assassination of Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2026, in Tehran, as part of a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation. The death of the Supreme Leader was confirmed on March 1, 2026. Argentine President Javier Milei publicly celebrated Khamenei’s death, referencing Iran’s history of terrorist attacks, including the 1994 bombing of the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA) in Buenos Aires, which resulted in 85 deaths. Argentine courts have ruled Iran and Hezbollah responsible for both the AMIA bombing and the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires.
