Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a joint venture between Fincantieri and Leonardo, has signed a contract worth approximately 3,7 miliardi di euro with OCCAR for the construction of two next-generation Ddx destroyers. The companies characterize the agreement as a generational leap for the future of the Italian Navy’s surface fleet, according to official corporate statements.
Contract Scope and Timeline
The 3,7 miliardi di euro deal covers the design, production, and delivery of two next-generation Ddx destroyers. According to announcements from the involved companies, delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for 2033, with the second unit slated to follow in 2035. The procurement is managed through OCCAR, the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation, reflecting a collaborative European defense procurement framework.
Technological Specifications and Combat Systems
The Ddx platform measures 180 meters in length with a displacement of 13.500 tonnellate. Fincantieri’s design incorporates the “Navis Sapiens” concept, emphasizing high levels of digitalization to establish what the shipbuilder terms “thinking ships.” Key technical innovations on the platform include:
- A direct current subgrid paired with an integrated energy storage system.
- An advanced stabilization system integrated directly with the steering apparatus.
- New algorithms and methods for calculating thermal and electrical balances.
- Digital upgrades to the Ship Management System.
For its combat and defense capabilities, the destroyers will feature the SADOC 5 new-generation C5I system alongside a high-power, fully digital S-band AESA radar. MBDA will supply missile systems designed to provide Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) capabilities against ballistic, hypersonic, and conventional missile threats. This interoperability framework aligns with Leonardo’s Project Michelangelo. Elt Group will also provide next-generation electronic warfare components, complemented by advanced smart-ammunition artillery and close-in defense systems.
