Finn Wolfhard, the 23-year-old actor and musician known for his breakout role in Netflix’s Stranger Things, has officially transitioned into a self-directed musical phase with the release of his latest album, Fire From the Hip. Following a busy two-year period that included filming the final season of Stranger Things, directing the feature film Hell of a Summer, and starring in the A24 creature feature The Legend of Ochi, Wolfhard is now prioritizing his solo music career and preparing for a new tour.
From Ensemble Acting to Solo Musical Control
For much of his early career, Wolfhard performed within the structure of bands like Calpurnia and The Aubreys, a dynamic he described as a "democracy" where he could hide behind a group identity. With the release of Fire From the Hip, Wolfhard has moved toward a solo-fronted approach. This shift required him to take full creative authority, a process he noted involved learning to stand firm on his artistic vision, even when it meant overriding the suggestions of his collaborators.

According to Wolfhard, the album reflects a desire to move beyond the rigid scripts of his acting career. "I spent my whole childhood standing on marks that other people told me to stand on and saying lines that other people told me to say," he stated. "Why wouldn’t I want to make my own stuff?"
Musical Influences and Production Style
Wolfhard’s sound on Fire From the Hip marks a departure from his previous work. While his earlier record, Happy Birthday, was recorded primarily on four-track cassette tapes, the new project utilizes 24-track reel-to-reel technology. The album draws from a wide range of influences, blending surf-rock, 1990s alternative, and country-folk.
The track "I’ll Let You Finish" serves as a thematic opener, referencing the 2009 Kanye West VMA incident, while other songs are inspired by literature, such as Donald Ray Pollock’s Knockemstiff. Wolfhard remains transparent about the challenge of balancing his public persona with his personal songwriting. He acknowledges that his status as a high-profile actor means his lyrics are often scrutinized through the lens of his Stranger Things fame, yet he maintains that his goal is to remain as truthful as possible in his writing.
Upcoming Tour and Future Projects
Beyond the album release, Wolfhard is scheduled to perform at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on October 13. He continues to balance his music with ongoing film commitments, including upcoming projects with Matt Johnson and Bong Joon Ho.

Despite the pressures of fame, Wolfhard emphasizes that his current focus remains on the collaborative spirit of touring with his friends. He noted that the experience of playing music live helped shape the final sound of Fire From the Hip, providing a space where he can exercise creative control while remaining connected to his peers. As he looks toward his next steps in both film and music, he aims to pursue projects that feel increasingly personal, moving further away from the external expectations that defined his early years in the industry.
