Kristian Sallinen to Lead Latvian National Symphony Orchestra in Dynamic Concert

Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen will return to the conductor’s desk with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) on March 20, 2026, for a performance featuring works by Grieg, Dvořák, Raitio, Lindberg, and Beethoven. Sallinen is recognized as one of the brightest conducting talents of his generation.

A Rising Star in the Nordic Symphony Scene

Kristian Sallinen has quickly gained international attention with significant orchestral debuts and return engagements across the Nordic region and beyond. The 2025/26 season includes subscription debuts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symfoniorkester, and Oulu Sinfonia. He will as well make his opera debut with the Finnish National Opera in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta in May 2026. Kristian Sallinen’s official website details these engagements.

Concert Program Highlights

The LNSO concert will showcase a diverse program, including the premiere of Veine Raitio’s symphonic poem, “Moonlight on Jupiter” in Latvia. Raitio was a Finnish composer who moved away from the prevailing national romanticism of the early 20th century, embracing modern styles and influences from Western European music, particularly Alexander Scriabin.

Magnus Lindberg’s Concerto for clarinet and orchestra will also be performed, featuring soloist Mārtiņš Circenis, concertmaster of the clarinet group for the LNSO, Latvian National Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and Sinfonietta Riga.

The concert will culminate with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, a cornerstone of symphonic repertoire known for its iconic opening motif and its representation of the struggle and triumph over adversity.
