Guangzhou is set to host a global showcase of bipedal engineering. The People’s Government of Guangdong Province announced on September 29, 2026, that the inaugural International Humanoid Robot Basketball Challenge will kick off in mid-April 2027.
The Athletic and Performance Tracks
Open to global enterprises, universities, research institutes, and innovation teams, the tournament features five competitive events and a freestyle performance category. These divisions are engineered specifically to test precision, dynamic adaptation, and complex decision-making in robotic systems.
The athletic track consists of stationary free-throw shooting, moving three-point shooting, human-robot collaborative passing, stationary dribbling endurance, and the dribbling obstacle layup.
These distinct challenges demand rigorous performance standards. They test precise operation, dynamic environment adaptation, human-robot coordination, rhythm control, and overall endurance.
Strict Bipedal Locomotion Mandates
Hardware requirements for the athletic events are exacting. Robots entering these competitions must feature a humanoid body structure complete with a head, torso, arms, and two legs connected directly to the torso.
Bipedal standing and walking serve as the sole locomotion mechanism. Participating units must also be able to recover from falls autonomously.
By contrast, the freestyle basketball performance category places no restrictions on lower-body structure. This freedom allows teams to choreograph custom routines and intricate formation changes.
Registration Limits and Safety Protocols
Logistical caps govern tournament entry. Each participating unit may field a maximum of three teams, including joint entries, with up to five staff members per team.
Athletic entries are strictly capped at two robots per team. Meanwhile, freestyle performance entries face no robot quantity limits, and teams may enter multiple events using different robots for different categories.
Safety requirements remain paramount. All participating robots must carry a standard-equipped handheld controller featuring auxiliary operational functions and an emergency stop button.
Industry Exhibition and Matchmaking Hub
Beyond the court, the event serves a broader commercial purpose. Organizers will host an enterprise exhibition zone alongside the tournament to showcase core components, control algorithms, and training platforms.
The competition will conclude with dedicated post-event industry matchmaking sessions, connecting innovators directly with commercial markets.
