To combat the spread, health officials have administered more than 4,100 MMR vaccinations through 91 pop-up clinics across the state, with plans to establish 40 additional sites in the coming weeks.

The fatalities in Pennsylvania have intensified public scrutiny of federal health leadership, particularly regarding Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who serves as the nation’s health secretary. Five years prior to the outbreak, Kennedy delivered remarks in Lancaster County praising the community’s low childhood vaccination rates, downplaying measles, and suggesting that chicken soup and vitamin A constituted a cure. Today, critics argue that his long-standing vaccine skepticism has complicated federal and local efforts to encourage vaccination during an active outbreak.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro told reporters he had a blunt conversation with Kennedy regarding the administration’s messaging. According to Shapiro, the rhetoric coming from the federal administration has a negative impact on communities across America and in Pennsylvania, making it harder for parents to protect their children. Meanwhile, Senator Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland called for Kennedy’s resignation or termination, writing on social media that his public statements are making Maryland residents sick. The advocacy group 314 Action also joined in demanding his removal, questioning how many more casualties would occur before broader calls for his resignation mounted.
