Jakarta, IO – Fishing vessels crowd the Muara Angke National Fishing Port in Penjaringan, Jakarta (Feb. 11). The congestion had temporarily paralyzed shipping activities but has gradually begun to ease.
Fishermen said they had raised concerns about the issue long ago as it has been disrupting their livelihoods. They also fear that the overcrowding could trigger fires, similar to an incident that previously occurred in Muara Baru.
After coordinating with the Jakarta administration, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) has begun relocating idle fishing vessels at the port. The ministry said the congestion was caused by the number of vessels exceeding the harbor basin’s capacity. Bad weather, along with traffic management and docking arrangements, further worsened the situation.

Observations at the site showed thousands of fishing boats docked side by side in extremely tight quarters. Some vessels were undergoing repairs, while others were attempting to maneuver out of the congestion to resume sailing.
Previously, the port was in critical condition after more than 1,300 vessels piled up in a single area. Overall, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry recorded around 2,500 boats occupying the port, leaving vessel movement nearly at a standstill. (IO/Septo Kun Wijaya)
