Google Fitbit Integration to Leverage Personal Health Records with AI-Powered Coach
Google is enhancing its Fitbit health coach with the ability to integrate users’ personal health records, offering more personalized insights and recommendations. The update, announced at Google’s annual health event, The Check Up, will initially be available in the United States next month.
AI-Powered Health Insights
The integration will allow Fitbit app users to link their complete medical background, including lab results, medications, and visit history, providing a more comprehensive view of their health. According to Google, this data will be securely accessible “all in one place and under [their] control.”
This information will be fed into the Fitbit personal health coach, an AI assistant powered by Google’s Gemini model. Users will be able to ask questions such as “How can I improve my cholesterol?” and receive tailored summaries and recommendations.
Partnerships and Security Measures
To facilitate this integration, Google is collaborating with third-party services like b. Well and CLEAR. Users can search for their healthcare provider within the Fitbit app and link their profiles through these partners. Given the sensitive nature of medical data, Google will require users to provide identification and a selfie to verify their identity before granting access to their health records.
Improvements to Wellness Tracking
Beyond the health records integration, Google is similarly focusing on improving the accuracy of its core wellness tracking features. Updates to Fitbit’s sleep tracking models aim to more accurately distinguish between actual sleep and periods of wakefulness. The platform will now directly support continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) through Health Connect, providing more detailed metabolic health data for users.
Public Preview and Availability
These changes are currently rolling out to Public Preview users starting next month. More information is available on Google’s blog.
