Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 29 Claims Four Lives Near Colman

Four people died last Monday, Oct. 26, when an 88-year-old man driving a pickup truck the wrong direction on Interstate 29 slammed head-on into a van carrying four teenagers near Colman, South Dakota. The 8:35 p.m. collision occurred near mile marker 119, roughly 10 miles north of Colman, when a northbound 2020 Ford Ranger traveling in the southbound lanes struck a 2003 Dodge Caravan, according to the Mitchell Republic.

How the Collision Unfolded on Interstate 29

The Dodge Caravan was passing a 2017 Peterbilt semi-truck when the Ford Ranger hit it head-on, the Mitchell Republic reported. The force of the initial impact pushed the van into the semi-truck, causing the commercial vehicle to strike the Caravan as well. The driver of the semi-truck, a 59-year-old man from Arlington, wore a seat belt and sustained no injuries, per the same report.

Investigators stated that both the 88-year-old driver of the Ford Ranger and all four occupants of the Dodge Caravan were ejected from their vehicles and were not wearing seat belts. The driver of the Ford Ranger, from Hendricks, Minnesota, died. Three of the teenagers inside the van—a 15-year-old driver, a 12-year-old passenger, and a 16-year-old passenger, all from Flandreau—also died. A fourth passenger, a 12-year-old girl from Flandreau, survived the crash with life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

Community Mourns Flandreau Students as Investigation Continues

The three girls who died attended Flandreau Public Schools, and the district provided counseling resources for students and staff following the tragedy, Cleveland.com reported. The students were also members of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, which organized donation efforts to assist the victims’ families with funeral expenses. The South Dakota Highway Patrol leads the ongoing investigation into the crash, with preliminary details provided by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
