Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born on April 12, 1950, in Verzuolo, Piedmont, Italy, to elementary school teachers Giacomo Briatore and Caterina Chiotti, Flavio Briatore’s early life laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial spirit. After attending a technical institute and later completing his education at a private institute, he initially worked as a ski instructor. He briefly attempted to run a restaurant in San Giacomo di Roburent, but it closed due to insufficient revenue.

Early Business Ventures and Benetton

In 1977, Briatore played a key role in Attilio Dutto’s acquisition of a majority stake in Paramatti Vernici, receiving a 2% share and being appointed CEO at the age of 27 – making him the youngest managing director of an Italian company listed on the stock exchange. Following Dutto’s assassination, Briatore relocated to Milan and subsequently to the United States in 1985. There, he established Benetton franchises, forging a close working relationship with Luciano Benetton, which ultimately led to his involvement with the Benetton Formula 1 team.

Formula One Success and Controversy

Briatore became a central figure in Formula One, leading the Benetton team (later Renault F1 Team) to three World Constructors’ Championships and four World Drivers’ Championships. However, his tenure was marked by controversy, including allegations of cheating in the 1994 “Launch Control” incident and the 2007 “Spygate” affair. He faced the most significant challenge in 2008 with the “Crashgate” scandal, which led to his forced departure from Renault and a lifetime ban from F1. This ban was later overturned by a French court.

Return to Alpine F1 and Business Diversification

Fifteen years after his initial exit, Briatore returned to the Enstone-based team, now operating as Alpine F1, serving as executive advisor and de facto team principal. Beyond Formula One, Briatore has diversified his business interests, heading the international luxury hospitality group Majestas (formerly Billionaire Life). He previously owned stakes in restaurants and clubs, including Twiga and Billionaire, which he sold to Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio for approximately 50 million euros. In 2024, he sold his 25.5% share of the El Camineto restaurant for 200,000 euros after a prior investment of 50,000 euros.

Personal Life

Briatore has been in relationships with several prominent figures, including Naomi Campbell (1998-2003) and Heidi Klum (2003-2004). He was married to Elisabetta Gregoraci from 2008 to 2017 and has two children, including Leni Klum.
