Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Takes to the Skies with PS VR2 Support

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, already available on PlayStation 5, is set to receive a free update adding support for PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) later this year. The update aims to deliver a highly immersive flight simulation experience, leveraging the advanced capabilities of the PS VR2 headset.

Redesigning Cockpit Interactions for VR

Asobo Studio and Microsoft Game Studios are focusing on redesigning cockpit interactions to capture full advantage of the PS VR2 Sense controllers. Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, explained that the complexity of the game’s controls—numerous instruments, knobs, and switches—required a complete overhaul to ensure natural and intuitive control within the VR environment. “Every interaction model had to be redesigned to fit the PS VR2 Sense controllers and allow for natural and intuitive control,” Neumann stated.PlayStation Blog

Technical Challenges and Solutions

Developing the PS VR2 mode presented significant technical challenges, particularly in maintaining a smooth framerate essential for a visually demanding game. The development team implemented several key technologies to address these issues:

  • Foveated Rendering with Flexible Scaled Rasterization: This technique focuses rendering power on the areas where the player is looking, improving visual fidelity without sacrificing performance. Getting this right proved challenging, as even minor errors could lead to noticeable quality issues. PlayStation Blog
  • Frame Duplication: To further enhance framerate, the render thread iterates twice for each frame displayed on the main thread, updating the camera position in between.

Inspired by Gran Turismo 7’s VR Implementation

The development of the PS VR2 mode for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 draws inspiration from Gran Turismo 7’s virtual reality implementation. Neumann highlighted the goal of creating a similar sense of presence, stating, “It’s about the sense of size…in virtual reality, you can perceive the massiveness of a rock wall when you’re circling right next to it in a helicopter.” PlayStation Blog He also noted that experiencing a storm while virtually flying, looking through a clear section of the windshield, is a completely different experience than on a flat screen.

VR Activities and Aircraft

Players will be able to enjoy a variety of activities in VR, including adrenaline-pumping Red Bull Air Races, transport flights, sightseeing, and balloon flights. The game will feature over 100 different aircraft to pilot in the virtual environment.

The release date for the PS VR2 update is yet to be announced, but development is reportedly on track.PlayStation Blog
