Former Temple Terrace police officer Zachary K. stands charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving following an April 15 crash near Tampa, Florida. Prosecutors allege the 25-year-old reached speeds of 104 mph in a 50 mph zone while operating an unmarked police vehicle. The resulting collision claimed the life of six-year-old Leila and left her mother and two sisters severely injured.
A Deadly Intersection in Tampa
Investigators report the incident began when Zachary K., allegedly running late for his shift, activated his emergency lights to bypass a red light. The prosecution contends the officer then accelerated to more than double the posted speed limit. As he approached an intersection, he struck a vehicle driven by a woman performing food deliveries with her three daughters on board. Despite braking, the officer hit the family’s car at approximately 74 mph (119 km/h).
The Toll on a Young Family
Six-year-old Leila died at the scene. Her mother and two sisters, aged 18 months and eight years, suffered severe injuries. According to a public fundraising campaign, the eight-year-old girl sustained spinal and pelvic fractures, necessitating a medically induced coma. The mother suffered broken ribs and facial injuries, while the youngest child was treated for a concussion.
Disputed Claims of a Pursuit
The defense maintains Zachary K. is innocent, arguing he was acting in the line of duty. Counsel for the former officer claims he was engaged in the pursuit of another motorist traveling at a high rate of speed. Prosecutors strongly dispute this account, asserting there is no evidence a pursuit was underway. They contend the officer’s decision to drive at such extreme speeds showed a reckless disregard for public safety that directly caused the tragedy.
Termination and Upcoming Court Dates
Following the crash, the Temple Terrace Police Department terminated Zachary K.’s employment. He was subsequently arrested and released after posting bond. In his recent Florida court appearance, he entered a plea of not guilty. The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for August 13.
