Florida has largest local dengue outbreak in decades, say officials

Florida is experiencing its largest local dengue fever outbreak on the continental United States in decades, recording over 250 locally acquired cases this year, according to state health officials and medical records cited by Informador.mx. The vast majority of these infections are concentrated in Hillsborough County, where local authorities have responded by declaring a state of emergency and conducting intensive day-and-night mosquito spraying in the area of Tampa.

Federal health data on the outbreak remains limited, but state health department numbers and medical journal archives indicate this year’s tally marks the highest calendar-year total for any U.S. state since at least the 1940s, as Informador.mx reported. The previous continental high occurred in Hawaii during 2015 and 2016, when 264 locally acquired cases were reported over a six-month period.

Emergency Declarations and Aerial Spraying Across Tampa Bay

The outbreak prompted swift municipal responses throughout the Tampa Bay region after traps detected active dengue virus populations in local mosquitoes. Hillsborough County administrator Bonnie Wise signed a local state of emergency declaration on September 24, as detailed by Univision. Neighboring Pasco and Pinellas counties also adopted emergency declarations, with Pasco acting on Wednesday and Pinellas following on Thursday, according to Univision.

Hillsborough County extended its local emergency through October 8, maintaining a Level 3 “Monitoring” response through its Emergency Operations Center, Univision reported. The county deployed helicopters for aerial treatments throughout September in areas including South Tampa, East Tampa, Seminole Heights, Bloomingdale, Riverview, West Tampa, and Davis Islands, following positive mosquito trap samples noted by Univision and La Opinion. Ground-based and aerial fogging also targeted specific neighborhoods such as Ybor City and Palma Ceia.

Hillsborough County reports most infections

Hillsborough County accounts for 223 of those infections, an increase of 53 cases in a single week. Miami-Dade County reported eight cases, Pinellas County recorded 13, Pasco County logged three, Orange County documented two, and both Palm Beach and Polk counties reported one case each, based on state data analyzed by Telemundo Tampa and Univision.

However, travel remains a factor in seeding the virus; Dawn Wesson, an expert in dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases at Tulane University, explained to Informador.mx that most residents in the Tampa metropolitan area lack prior immunity to any form of dengue, creating high susceptibility to infection.

Clinical Symptoms and Warning Signs of Severe Infection

Dengue is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a vector that also transmits zika and chikungunya, as outlined by La Opinion. Approximately one in four infected individuals develops symptoms, which typically appear three to 14 days after a mosquito bite, according to La Opinion. Common symptoms include sudden high fever, severe muscle and joint pain—giving the illness its historical nickname “breakbone fever”—alongside severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, nausea, vomiting, and rashes, as noted by Telemundo Tampa and Informador.mx.

Severe cases can progress to hemorrhaging, shock, and death. Florida recorded a dengue-related fatality of the year on September 4, involving an older woman from Tampa, according to Informador.mx. Health officials emphasize that patients should seek immediate medical attention if warning signs appear—particularly as fever begins to subside between the third and seventh day of illness. Warning signs cited by La Opinion include intense abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, rapid breathing, extreme fatigue, and cold or clammy skin.

Doctors warn against aspirin and NSAIDs

Healthcare providers advise patients with suspected or confirmed dengue to consult a medical professional before taking any medication, as reported by La Opinion. Acetaminophen may be used as a complement to reduce fever, but certain medications must be strictly avoided because they increase the risk of internal bleeding and complications. La Opinion explicitly warns against using aspirin, which raises hemorrhage risks and can cause Reye’s syndrome in children, as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

How dengue spreads in Florida

How do people contract dengue fever in Florida?

Dengue is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti, which thrive in warm climates. State health records show that 252 cases this year were acquired directly within Florida, driven by local transmission cycles in the Tampa Bay area, as reported by Telemundo Tampa and Informador.mx.

Why are Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties under a state of emergency?

Local officials declared emergencies to expedite financial expenditures, streamline mosquito-control procedures, and authorize aggressive aerial and ground-based pesticide spraying. The declarations were triggered after municipal traps in neighborhoods such as Seminole Heights, Ybor City, and West Tampa detected active dengue virus in local mosquito populations, according to The Opinion and Univision.

What makes this year’s outbreak historically significant?

State health department numbers and medical journal archives indicate that Florida’s current count of over 250 locally acquired cases represents the highest calendar-year total for any U.S. state since at least the 1940s, surpassing the previous modern continental peak set in Hawaii in 2015 and 2016, according to data outlined by Informador.mx.
