Panthers’ Zito Navigates Crucial Week with Trade Deadline and Stanley Cup Pursuit in Mind

The Florida Panthers face a pivotal week as they return from the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 break, with General Manager Bill Zito closely evaluating the team’s performance to inform decisions regarding the Trade Deadline and a potential push for a third consecutive Stanley Cup championship.

Evaluating the Team’s Performance

Zito emphasized the importance of the upcoming games, stating that this week will determine his approach to the Trade Deadline. The Panthers will play back-to-back games against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday and the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, followed by a visit to the New York Islanders on Sunday to start a four-game road trip. “This is obviously a very important week,” Zito said. “We may have easy answers, or easy questions to answer, at the conclude of it. Or we may have real difficult ones, I don’t know. I will be watching every game.”

Playoff Positioning and Key Decisions

Currently (as of February 25, 2026), the Panthers hold a record of 29-25-3 and are eight points behind the Boston Bruins for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Contract Considerations and Potential Moves

Florida has six players set to become unrestricted free agents after the season: forwards A.J. Greer, Cole Schwindt, and Luke Kunin; defenseman Uvis Balinskis; and goalies Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov. To create salary cap space for potential acquisitions, the Panthers could consider placing center Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve due to a knee injury, though this would preclude his return during the playoffs.

“There is any number of scenarios that may present themselves,” Zito stated. “We just have to be poised to make decisions for each of the fact patterns that are presented to us. And we will.”

Recent Success and Championship Pedigree

Bill Zito has led the Florida Panthers to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in the Final both times, in 2025 and 2026. He has also been a four-time finalist for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. In July 2025, Zito celebrated the Stanley Cup win by bringing the trophy to the Theater of the Sea in the Florida Keys, sharing the moment with seals and dolphins.
