Flu Cases in Ireland Expected to Peak During Christmas Week

The Health Service Executive (HSE) reports that flu cases are likely to peak during Christmas week. As of December 16th, 634 people were hospitalized with the flu, and modeling predicts the outbreak will reach its height during the Christmas period.

At the peak,hospitals could see between 800 and 1,100 patients with the flu on any given day.

An emergency doctor at Cork University Hospital described a consistent influx of patients of all ages experiencing flu-like symptoms, adding strain to the entire hospital system. Dr. Seán Underwood, following a 24-hour shift, stated, “A lot of people are really unwell with fever, severe aches, cough and breathlessness.”

Hospital admissions have increased as the flu arrived earlier this year than in previous seasons. Dr. Underwood emphasized the potential severity of the illness, notably for vulnerable populations. “In vulnerable groups it can indeed be life-threatening. 62 admissions this year to ICU and 17 deaths so far,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Dr. Underwood noted improvements in preparedness compared to previous years. He acknowledged the contributions of GP colleagues extending their hours and the public’s increased vaccination rates.
