Flu Vaccine Shortage in Ireland Sparks Prioritization of Elderly Immunizations
Ireland is experiencing a temporary flu vaccine shortage, prompting pharmacies to restrict private immunizations to individuals aged 65 and older, according to pharmacists and health officials. The disruption stems from an update to all three strains in the annual flu vaccine, as advised by the World Health Organization (WHO). This change has created a manufacturing challenge, with pharmaceutical companies prioritizing supplies for the Health Service Executive (HSE) over private pharmacies, according to Larry Macken, of Macken’s Chemist in Blackrock, Dublin.
Strain Updates Trigger Manufacturing Challenges
The flu vaccine includes modifications to all three viral strains compared to the usual practice of updating only one strain annually. This shift has led to production delays, Macken said. “Normally, just one strain is updated, but this year’s changes created a manufacturing crunch,” he explained. The HSE’s free vaccination program, set to launch on 8 October, is receiving priority shipments, leaving private pharmacies with limited stock.
Minister Addresses Supply Disruptions
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill acknowledged the disruptions but emphasized that the immunocompromised and other vulnerable groups remain prioritized. She said there was a wait on the private side for flu vaccinations and that she hoped private patients would understand the need to get the vaccine to those most at-risk first. The minister noted that the flu season is still early, with additional vaccines expected to arrive.
