Musical Shift and Production Details
Produced by James Ford, the new album marks a distinct departure from the group’s earlier guitar-driven sound.
Recording sessions took place across London, the English countryside, and Palermo. In Palermo, Chatten recorded his vocals inside a makeshift recording booth constructed from mattresses and cushions.
Lyrical Themes and Conceptual Framework
Lyrically, the album explores contemporary anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence, environmental collapse, and political violence. Chatten gathered inspiration for the lyrics while spending time in Venice, Vienna, and Sicily. He noted that the new material reflects a grim outlook rather than forced optimism.
“This one feels more like 60 per cent corrupted—the mask is wearing the face a little more.” He added that the band intentionally omitted hopeful resolutions, stating, “I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This one needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning.”
Bassist Conor Deegan discussed the record’s conceptual evolution regarding geography and escapism. “First Dublin, then being away from Dublin, and then trying to find the romance elsewhere. On this record, the question became: where do you escape to?”
Touring and Release Schedule
Fontaines D.C.—comprising Chatten, Carlos O’Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan, and Tom Coll—will support the album cycle with live appearances, including a scheduled performance at Electric Picnic in County Laois on August 30. The band has previously released four studio albums: Dogrel (2019), A Hero’s Death (2020), Skinty Fia (2022), and Romance (2024), earning Grammy and Brit Award nominations along the way.
