Food Waste Action Week 2026: Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Joins Effort to Save Money and the Planet
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is supporting Love Food Hate Waste’s Food Waste Action Week, running from March 9th to 15th, 2026. The annual event aims to help households reduce food waste through practical changes at home.
Focus on Affordability and Sustainability
This year’s theme, ‘Make your food go fuuuurther: for your pocket, for our planet,’ emphasizes simple, everyday actions that can save money, reduce stress, and protect the environment. Reducing food waste is increasingly significant given rising costs and climate concerns.
The Scale of the Problem
Across the UK, 4.4 million tonnes of edible food are wasted annually from households, contributing to 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. The financial cost of this waste is estimated at £17 billion per year, or approximately £1,000 annually for a family of four.
Simple Steps for Reducing Waste
Councillor Philip Campbell, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, highlighted the importance of making the most of purchased food, especially with the ongoing cost of living crisis. He emphasized that meal planning, proper food storage, and utilizing leftovers are key strategies for saving money and protecting the environment.
Dr. Sam Hubble, Specialist for Food System Transformation at WRAP, succinctly stated the goal: “Eat what you buy and love every mouthful.” He added that reducing food waste saves money, resources, and helps the planet.
Local Composting Initiatives
Food waste collected locally in brown bins is sent to an in-vessel composting facility. This process transforms the waste into nutrient-rich compost and soil conditioner, which can be used in homes, farms, and throughout the community. Utilizing brown bins reduces landfill waste, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and creates a valuable resource for local environments.
